Advice for mothers using Diphenhydramine while breastfeeding. Includes possible effects on breastfed infants and lactation.
The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed. However, suckling-induced prolactin secretion is not affected by antihistamine pretreatment of postpartum mothers. Whether lower oral doses of antihistamines have the same effect on serum prolactin or whether the effects on prolactin have any consequences on breastfeeding success have not been studied. Antihistamines in relatively high doses given by injection can decrease basal serum prolactin in nonlactating women and in early postpartum women.
Availability Rx and/or OTC.
Any of you mamas still breastfeeding and take melatonin? I'm desperate for sleep. My lo is sleeping through the night but my insomnia is keeping me.
Although my pediatrician, LC and PCP have all said its fine. I take Tylenol PM occasionally. DD doesn't BF at night tho so I can take it at 7 and not need to BF until 7am. Melatonin never worked for me.
Neither one independently works very well for me, but together they work GREAT! And they are safe and I am not groggy in the morning. The only thing I would warn you about of that on the rare occasion that my LO gets up in the middle of the night, it is extra hard to drag myself out of bed ;-).

I am a breast feeding mother who is feeling quite under the weather. I'm not sure if it's a cold or the Before I became pregnant Nyquil and Dayquil were the medications that all had the best results for me. Are they safe for my baby now some good immunities. http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/cold.

When I was sick I was told to avoid medication with pseudoephedrine in it because it decreases milk supply.

The prescribing Doctor had no clue if I could have it while breastfeeding and referred me to talk to my OB. Called OB and she referred me to my pharmacist. Pharmacist said only take ibuprofen. I have read on Kelly Mom and lots of different websites and all the information is conflicting- some say it is safe.
Tramadol and narcotics are safe. I took both.
Lol yeah. The nurse at the jail gave me two for a headache one day lol. It's not real strong at all.
Thank you all so much for the help! I really appreciate it!
Tramadol is unlikely to adversely affect nursing infant and is acceptable to use during breastfeeding. The excretion of tramadol into milk is low and even lower amounts of the active metabolite, O-desmethyltramadol, are excreted. However, monitor infants for increased sleepiness (more than usual), difficulty breastfeeding, breathing difficulties or limpness, and contact a physician immediay if any of these occur.
